FAQ

What is the best Shogun 2 clan for beginners?
Shimazu is a useful first choice for players who prefer a corner start and katana-focused armies. Oda suits players learning economical ashigaru tactics, but its central position creates more diplomatic pressure.
Does this ranking cover Complete Edition minor clans?
No. This comparison uses documented classic Sengoku clan traits and starting positions. Newly playable Complete Edition minor clans need separate checks of their campaign selection details and current build.
Should I choose a clan before choosing the campaign?
Choose the campaign first. Rise of the Samurai, Sengoku Shogun 2 and Fall of the Samurai use different political and military frameworks; this comparison focuses on classic Sengoku.

Choose the campaign before the clan

This comparison covers classic Sengoku, not a universal tier list across all three campaigns. A faction in Rise of the Samurai plays under a different campaign framework from one in Fall of the Samurai. Start with the era and battlefield you want to learn; then choose a clan whose opening makes those lessons manageable.

There is no single best clan for every difficulty or player. Starting geography, affordable troops and the number of exposed borders often matter more to a newcomer than a powerful specialist unit unlocked later.

Shimazu: a clear military identity

Shimazu begins in Satsuma at the southern end of Kyushu. Its documented classic advantages include reduced katana samurai recruitment and upkeep, superior katana units and increased general loyalty. The corner position makes it easier to understand where the next land threat is likely to come from.

The trade-off is distance. Securing Kyushu does not finish a campaign whose objectives include Kyoto. You still need money and a secure route for moving beyond the island. Read the Shimazu opening guide if you want to turn that geographic advantage into a steady expansion route.

Oda: learn to win with affordable troops

Oda’s classic bonuses improve ashigaru morale and reduce their recruitment and upkeep costs. That makes mistakes less expensive to replace and rewards learning the basics: stable frontage, protected archers and coordinated attacks.

Its central start is the complication. Nearby clans can pull your army in different directions, and taking another province may create another border. Choose Oda for the army style, not because you expect a quiet opening. The Oda guide explains how to limit simultaneous wars, while Yari Wall fundamentals cover the spear line.

Every clan still needs a response to cavalry and exposed flanks.

Make the decision with three questions

Your preference Useful starting choice What you must still learn
Fewer land directions to watch Shimazu Funding island expansion and the journey toward Kyoto
Affordable infantry and active battles Oda Diplomacy, frontage and avoiding multiple fronts
A different historical setting Choose an expansion campaign first Its campaign-specific systems and recruitment

Before ending early turns, check projected upkeep and food income. Before a long conquest chain, read the Realm Divide guide. These checks can save a strong faction from a weak campaign plan.

Complete Edition changes infantry fatigue and offers configurable Realm Divide. The recommendations above are grounded in legacy profiles, rather than a claim that every matchup has been retested in the new release. Its minor-clan catalogue offers more choices without proving a new strongest faction.
